Ninja Phoenix and DJ and The Gloopy Glop

Glue ear is a condition that affects 8 out of 10 children in the UK. We wanted to help people understand more about the condition and how it can be treated.

Early one morning as the sun was rising over Bug Land, the mist around the Mountain of Never Returning was fading gently. Inside the mountain was the secret base of the Deaf Ninja Team - DNT for short. These brave and clever ninja were the protectors of Bug Land and all the creatures who lived there.

Even without their hearing aids in, Ninja Phoenix and DJ were woken up by the sound of Fred snoring loudly. “BOOM,” the ground shook and Ninja Phoenix and DJ looked alarmingly at each other and then at Fred. “That was not snoring!” they shouted together. With lightening quick speed, they grabbed their hearing aids and turned them on. “Let's investigate,” shouted Ninja Phoenix. “Switched on and ready for action,” they all replied. They grabbed their swords and ninja stars, jumped on their bullet bikes and followed the echoey sound of the boom.

They could control their amazing motorbikes with their hearing aids and talk to each other using their Roger Radio. “Where’s it coming from?” said DJ. “Maybe from where that smoke is rising?” said Phoenix. “I’ve never seen that before,” said Fred. They followed the smoke over the dangerous river of crocodiles by making their motorbikes go at the speed of light and in no time at all they got to the source of the smoke. It was a humongous asteroid’s impact zone and at the centre was a gigantic lump of earwax!

A brave ninja called Bob went to investigate further, creeping slowly and carefully towards the yellowy brown gloop. But not carefully enough - he stepped onto the wax and was immediately stuck fast! The lump of earwax started to rumble, it was laughing and moving, rising up into the form of a massive waxy monster. Bob was scared, but his friends knew what to do. Reaching into their ninja belt pockets they picked out their olive oil blasters, loaded them and aimed at the hideous creature, making sure they targeted its bottom where Bob was stuck. The olive oil softened the wax around Bob just enough for him to free himself, and he ran back to the other ninjas shouting: “I’ve got an idea! Let’s use the Hoover of Doom, it’s the only thing that will stop him!”

“Good idea Bob, let’s go and get it,” said Fred, and they rode back to their base at the speed of light. Back at base, the Ninja activated the Hoover of Doom, which looked like a big version of the hoovers used to suck wax out of children’s ears. They set it in spaceship mode, hopped in, and flew back to the crater. “Flip the switch and turn it on!” shouted DJ. “Let's suck up that horrid monster.” The Hoover of Doom rumbled into life. The waxy monster turned and tried to run away, but the suction was too powerful for him to resist. Slowly but surely he was sucked into its tube and dissolved in the vat of olive oil. “YES!” cheered all of the Ninja together. “We caught him! Let’s get back to base and party!” The End.

One of our judges, Julia Donaldson CBE said: "A good adventure story. I thought the giant lump of earwax and the olive-oil blasters were a stroke of genius!"

Dylan

Dylan (8) is moderately deaf. He came in our top 10 in the book competition we held last year. Dylan said: "I felt exited and happy to be in the top 10, I was also surprised, also proud."
