Sign Supported English (SSE)
Sign Supported English (SSE) is a way of communicating that uses signing and spoken English at the same time.
When you use SSE, you speak in English and sign key words in British Sign Language (BSL). You don't need to sign every word. SSE uses English word order, rather than following BSL grammar rules.
SSE can be useful for:
- supporting lip-reading for deaf people who use speech
- communicating using speech in a noisy place
- BSL users learning English
- communicating in a group with people who use BSL and English.
