Elliot’s story

Elliot (10) went to our performing arts event Raising the Bar and loved it! He wants deaf young people to get the opportunity to meet other deaf young people near them, so is helping us raise money for future events.

“Before I went to Raising the Bar I had never met anyone else with hearing aids. When I first stepped into the building I was in floods of tears. I didn’t want my mum to leave me in a place where I didn’t know anyone.

"At lunch I met Lewis. We have lots in common - we both live near Portsmouth, we are both around the same age and we both support Liverpool Football Club! I was really sad when the event was over but my mum said she’d found out about a deaf children’s group in Portsmouth and I would see Lewis there.

Being able to go on this weekend was a privilege not many people get to have. It was the first time being deaf gave me a benefit. I had a weekend away that none of my hearing friends were allowed to go on!

"It was good to be somewhere everyone knew what it was like to be deaf. I loved not being the odd one out for a change.”

How we help deaf children and young people

We’re dedicated to supporting the UK’s 50,000 deaf children and young people, no matter their level of hearing loss or communication type.

If they need advice or support, we have a Helpline they can contact using whatever communication method they prefer.
