Joining a local group

Local groups bring families of deaf children together for support, socialising and community. If your family is interested in joining a local group, take a look at our information below.

If there isn’t a local group near you, why not start your own? Visit Starting a local group to find out more.

Our local groups are for all families of deaf children and young people. We welcome everyone, regardless of:

  • your child’s level of deafness
  • the language you prefer to use about deafness (for example – deaf, hearing loss, or hard of hearing)
  • communication preferences
  • education choices
  • technology choices
  • whether your child is newly identified as deaf or not
  • whether parents and family members are deaf or hearing
  • the age of your child (up to 18 years)

There are over 100 local deaf children’s groups up and down the UK. You can find your nearest group using our handy map.

Each local group is run by a friendly team, many of whom are parents or family members of deaf children. They’ll be excited to welcome you and your family!

Begin by getting in touch with your local group, using the contact details on our local groups map. They will give you details about their membership processes.

Feeling nervous or confused? Don’t be afraid to ask questions! Local groups have met so many parents in similar situations. They will be able to chat with you and give you all the information you need.

While there are loads of local groups across the country, there are still some areas without a group nearby.

If you don’t have a local group near you, you could:

  • talk to our Connecting Families team about groups that are new and still setting up with our support.
  • talk to us about online peer support.
  • start your own group – click here for more information.

You can email the Connecting Families team at [email protected].
