Supporting Children with a Suspected Hearing Loss in the Early Years

Photo: Learn how to recognise the signs of hearing loss

New! More accessible and interactive modules now available.

Deaf children can do anything other children can do, given the right support from the start. Good support in the early years will help deaf children reach their full potential.

Find out about our new and improved e-learning course for early years practitioners.

Module Overview

This series of modules has been developed for all mainstream early years practitioners. You'll learn to recognise the signs of hearing loss, provide support and improve the listening environment in your setting.

No previous experience of deafness is needed.

Effective language and communication skills lie at the heart of deaf children’s development and social and emotional wellbeing. That’s why identifying a suspected hearing loss and knowing what to do is so important.

What you'll learn

By the end of these modules you’ll be able to:

  • identify the stages of typical listening and attention development
  • recognise the impact of hearing loss on young children
  • recognise some signs of hearing loss
  • confidently share your concerns with parents and relevant professionals
  • use strategies to improve the listening environment
  • identify improvements you can make to your setting
  • identify improvements you can make to your professional practice.

Cost

These modules are free of charge.

Duration

This course has four modules. Each module should take about 15 minutes to complete. You're welcome to work through them at your own pace and revisit them anytime in the future.
