Raven’s Educational Matrices

Raven's Educational Matrices is a norm-referenced test which assesses verbal and non-verbal reasoning.

Age range

  • Coloured Progressive Matrices (CPM): 4–11 years
  • Standard Progressive Matrices, Plus version (SPM Plus): 7–18 years

Who can use it?

Any relevant professional.

How is it used?

The Coloured Progressive Matrices (CPM) can be used for individual assessment and takes 15 minutes.

The Standard Progressive Matrices, Plus version (SPM Plus) can be used for individual and group assessment. The test takes 45 minutes.

The child or young person is given a booklet of patterns of increasing difficulty, and is asked to complete the pattern from choices given.

What can it tell us?

Raven's Educational Matrices provides raw scores, standard scores, percentile ranks, confidence intervals, age equivalents, discrepancy analysis between matrices (CPM and SPM Plus) and vocabulary scales (Crichton Vocabulary Scales (CVS)). This means that the child’s score can be compared with that of hearing peers of their age.

Pros

  • Is well standardised.
  • Teachers can use it.
  • Can provide insights into how the child tackles non-verbal challenges.

Cons

  • Can be lengthy to carry out.

Is there a cost?

Yes.

Where can I access it?

Pearson Clinical website: Raven's Standard Progressive Matrices and Raven's Coloured Progressive Matrices.
