Hi everyone,

My son (8yrs) old who is having bilateral severe to profound sensorineural hearing loss. He is been wearing bilateral hearing aids and has been given auditory, speech and language training since 2019.

We are moving to London next year and i'm very new to this process. Hence i want to understand about admission process and how to apply for schools here?  If the child is not given admission in mainstream schools. which schools he will be eligible for? I read the state funded schools in sutton and Walthamstow are quite good but not sure if they have SEN support.

I'm reaching to gather more information and understand the process and support that is available for kids education.

Thank You.

Hi ravi

Thank you for starting this thread on school admission. I am sorry that you have not had any comments yet - Your Community is still very new and new members are joining each week.

When I applied for a new school for my moderately hearing-impaired son years ago, I always disclosed his communication needs and consulted his Teacher of the Deaf.  He studied in mainstream state secondary and sixth form schools with SEN teacher support.

In case you have not read it yet, there is some information on our website about Choosing a deaf-friendly school: https://www.ndcs.org.uk/information-and-support/education-and-learning/choosing-a-deaf-friendly-school/

If you need any further support, please feel free to contact our Helpline team.

Best wishes!

Hi Ravi,

We are just about to go through the primary school admissions process in Walthamstow so can't comment from experience, but I believe each borough has their own admissions process but are often related to catchment if your child does not have an EHCP. It would be worth looking on the local authority websites for the area you are looking to move to and there should be information available.

Does your son have an EHCP? If so the process is slightly different and you are able to 'name' a school of your choosing. Each borough has different provisions for deaf provision schools but I can tell you that Walthamstow does have a deaf provision primary called Whitehall primary though I havent visited as we plan to go mainstream. https://www.whitehallprimary.com/deaf-provision/

In London I have also heard good things about Frank Barnes (Camden) and Laycock School (Islington).

The mainstream schools vary in their holistic approach to SEND and some are more supportive than others. It would be best to contact schools directly to speak with the SENCO. There are a lot of good mainstream primary schools to choose from in Walthamstow and we are just in the process of doing so for our daughter!

Best of luck

Hi Kaz,

This is super helpful. Actually, we'll be migrating to UK early next year and want to gather information about schooling.

I wish you all the best for your daughter, thanks for taking time and replying back.
